Flu and Flu Vaccines: What You Need To Know

What’s the best way to protect ourselves against the flu?

Get a flu vaccine, appointments are available 7 days a week or you can walk-in to our clinic. The vaccine also protects other people around you by possibly preventing you from getting it and spreading it — so you might even end up saving someone’s life. Also, like with COVID-19 wearing masks and social distancing helps against getting and transmitting the flu. Also, be sure to eat well, stay active, and get a good night’s sleep.

When should I get my shot?

It is recommended to wait until mid-October or sometimes even early November to get your flu shot. That way you will get a little more protection over the holidays.

What should I do if I get the flu?

If you think you might have the flu, consider getting a flu test at Portland Urgent Care because if you get diagnosed with the flu early enough, you might be eligible to get antivirals that can reduce the length and severity of the illness. As with all colds and viruses it’s important to stay home and rest so that you can get better and minimize the chance of infecting others.

Can I get both the flu and COVID-19?

Yes, Testing can also reveal if someone has both flu and COVID-19 at the same time, although this is uncommon. People with flu and COVID-19 at the same time can have more severe disease than people with either flu or COVID-19 alone. Each test is available at our clinic.

Who is higher at risk to have complications from the flu?

  • people over age 65
  • residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • people who have heart failure and other cardiac conditions, or who suffer from asthma, COPD, or other lung diseases
  • people who have Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, strokes, or other neurological problems
  • people who have diabetes, weak immune systems, and chronic liver or kidney disease
  • pregnant women and new mothers
